Anyone Want To Play Some Board Games?

by admin on February 21, 2009

When did board games stop being categorized as purely fantastic fun? As a child I remember the storage space under the stairs in my house, jam packed with little boxes of fun. Monopoly taught you about investing and managing money, Clue helped inspiring detectives brush up on their police work, and Chutes and Ladders taught you about chutes and ladders.

You spent your time with a hungry hungry Hippo or a Mouse trying to get the cheese while avoiding the trap, you had a blast. Think back to all of your childhood board games memories and you will recall the happiest moments of your life (If someone died or you lost a limb while playing a board game, you might not want to recall these memories and I can totally understand). All you needed was the game, a box of bagel bites, a couple siblings and/or friends, and you were set for the day. It was all gravy…until we became teenagers.

Our teenage years were spent lighting things on fire, squashing innocent insects, and wondering what girls boobs smelt like…at least mine were. Board games moved from the storage space under the stairs to the garage, and I started spending my birthday money on Nerf Guns and Super Soakers. Looking back I realize I completely denied my game loving childhood. I buried my board game memories in my past and covered them with a board game’less’ future.

High school breezed by without the thought of Jenga or Sorry. The Nerf Guns and Super Soakers now too sat in the dark damp garage. The storage space was filled with heating lamps and pot plants, and of course, new memories. NOW college is where this whole thing switches up. College is all all about experimenting. It’s about being who you’ve wanted to be your whole life, but were too concerned about others opinions to ever do it. Some people start doing drugs, some come out of the closet, and people like me start searching. We search for the uninhibited happiness we had as a child…mine was in my garage under some Nerf Guns and heating lamps. The day I found my board games is the day I found my childhood.

Do I play board games everyday? No. Do I wish I did? YES. What I’m trying to say is board games are fucking amazing and if you too enjoy the thought of some White Zinfandel and Battleship, why don’t we hang out? If you smile at the thought of Connect Four and a comedic movie softly playing on the tube, lets party. Would a weekend marathon of Life and Candyland make you wanna dance?

Lets Dance Baby…Lets Dance,

Daniel Dickey
